When the new Edgerton Hospital and Health Services was built in 2010 (dedicated in 2011), the intention of including a healing garden behind the hospital was part of the plan. The 3-acre garden developed quickly around a retention pond behind (south) of the building with accessible paths, structures, raised beds and much more being constructed over the initial years. Refinements in plantings focus on sensory engagement along with increased attention to the patient/visitor experience which continues to guide current and future development. Volunteers have always played a prominent role in a garden that is used by patients, visitors, staff and the general public.
Mark Dwyer has been the garden manager for the healing garden since April of 2021. He manages an amazing group of volunteers and some summer grounds assistants as well. Prior to this, Mark was Director of Horticulture at Rotary Botanical Gardens (Janesville, WI) for 21 years and still runs his landscape design and consultation business; Landscape Prescriptions by MD. Mark has degrees in landscape architecture and urban forestry and his true passion is growing, observing and photographing plants.
